Wrapper
Like most women throughout West Africa, Songhai women are typically outfitted in a single layer (girls who are not married) or double layer (women who are married) ankle length wrap-around skirt, each wrap consisting of a two meter piece of cloth printed in bold, vibrant colors and vivacious patterns. This skirt is called a wrapper (pagne in French or zaara in Zerma / Songhai). It is tucked in at the waist so that the opening is on the left side. It is twisted to hold in place.
Tops vary according to task or cost – perhaps a western-style T-shirt, a baggy, calico print work shirt or a traditional long embroidered boubou.
They receive new clothes for marriage, for the birth of a new baby, and for holiday celebration. Contrary to Western culture, it is not an insult to have on the same material or pattern of dress as the next woman; the wearing of the same cloth implies friendship and solidarity of the group. Status in relation to clothing is defined by quality of cloth and accessories; the pattern of the material dates a dress, not the style.

Veil and Head Scarf
Within a world of heat, dust, sand, and need Songhai women cover their heads. Their scarves give witness to their modesty and submission to their husbands; their veils give witness of their submission to Allah. Veils and head scarves are also used as shade from the sun, extra covering in cooler weather, and a support in which to carry their babies on their backs. They are very useful on bad hair days!
Jewelry
Women throughout time, in all cultures, have desired to be beautiful. Girls of all ages enjoy looking pretty and having pretty things, such as jewelry and other adornments. While diamonds are a girl’s best friend in the western world, traditionally silver and colorful glass or plastic beads adorn Songhai women - neck, wrist, and waist, and ears!
Flip Flops
The outfit is completed most often with a pair of flip flops, which come in many different varieties and styles and prices throughout West Africa. Basically, they are economical and easy to wear.
